Never had a pet cow but would love to own a Miniature Highland? We can help walk you through the perfect set up to get you started no matter where you live. We want to make this as seamless as possible and cheer you on with every step of bringing home your Tiny Cow.
I will share a little history from when I started. When I purchased my first Miniature Highland calf, she was only 7 days old and she came to the farm at two weeks old. (But let me stop there and include, I know now that is way too young. But I didn’t know that at the time. However, the bond I have with her is unexplainable.) The only experience I had ever known with cattle, was my dad’s Black Angus – which intimidated me at the time. I wanted a small, cuddly, pet cow. I wanted to raise a baby on a bottle. I had raised miniature pigs for well over a decade and had always had the best bonding experience when I had raised them from a bottle. I wanted the same experience here, but this was much different than a little piglet. I had wanted a Miniature Highland for years and never thought it would actually happen … I was over the moon … But I also felt like I had no idea where to start when Charlsie was delivered to our door at 9:00pm, in the rain. We had never had to bottle feed any of our Angus as they were cared for by their mothers, and here I was with a very young calf that would solely rely on me for her nourishment. She barely knew how to take the bottle and was still getting her footing. We carried her into the house like a puppy, and I remember picking her up and sitting her in the living room recliner with me. We cozied up with a blanket and I looked at 2-week-old Charlsie and told her, “Okay. It’s you and me – I have a lot to learn … but we are learning together.” We fell asleep all cuddled up and the rest is history.
I have now raised 10 sweet tiny calves from babies and with each one, it is easier and we have strived for the best program we have implemented, having learned along the way. These days, all of my cows will come running when I walk into their pasture. They get so excited to see me and push each other out of the way for who will get loved on first. They each know their names and respond personally when I call them. I know them like the back of my hand: their favorite spot to be brushed, when they are happy, or when they seem off … I can sit down in the pasture with one of my cows and her newborn calf and snuggle them both. Sometimes when I am doing this, I will turn around to my other highlands coming to snuggle on the other side of me. They are more than pets to me; they are part of the family. This bond is what I want for you and your family. It is hard to explain how endearing this friendship can be, and I would love to help you find the perfect Tiny Cow for you!
